RAIC Congress 2023 Explores Climate and Architecture on World Architecture Day

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

OTTAWA, October 2, 2023 – The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) opened day one of its two-day Congress event in Whistler, BC on World Architecture Day. Congress 2023 focuses on the ongoing challenge of climate change and sustainable architecture and design.

Congress is organized into three parts, beginning today with a moderated discussion with Indigenous presenters focusing on how nature, ecological and Indigenous knowledge and practices must be at the centre of climate-resilient solutions.

According to the United Nations, Indigenous peoples safeguard an estimated 80% of the world’s remaining biodiversity. Indigenous people have been caring for the environment and nature for thousands of years and hold critical knowledge in the climate crisis.

Discussions at today’s event included findings from a variety of sources and covered themes including commitment to action (individual and organization level), different types of engagement in climate action, a summary of national engagement with the architectural community in the areas of practice, education and advocacy and a dialogue with several key built environment stakeholders about the power of collaboration and collective action.

The Honourable Anita Anand, President of the Treasury Board, addressed the RAIC and Congress delegates on the importance of architectural choices to green the Government of Canada's infrastructure for now and the future.

Architects are the frontrunners of a collective response to climate change and play a vital role in our Greening Government strategy. Thank you for your hard work and commitment to reaching #NetZero. Happy World Architecture Day!” – Minister Anand
