Percé, a tourist icon in Quebec, welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. Over the past several years, Percé has experienced climate changes that have had a devastating impact on its shoreline. After being declared a disaster area in 2017 due to the loss of its boardwalk and coastal erosion threatening heritage buildings, the city received exceptional government assistance. Percé went on to implement a fast-track rehabilitation of its waterfront using an innovative and sustainable approach of beach nourishment and building a beautiful new boardwalk that is environmentally friendly and reflects the historical context and local values.

“The shoreline was made resilient to future storms through environmentally sustainable design measures. The design team replaced a previously obtrusive and crumbling breakwater with a less visible, more environmentally sensitive approach. What is outstanding is that safe public access to the shoreline was preserved. The new vibrant public plazas, broad shoreline promenade, and beach access will promote the community as a tourist destination for years to come.”
