The Job Captain role is a key technical and systems leadership role on a dynamic Design & Construction team. The role is based at A&W’s Corporate Home Office in North Vancouver, near Lonsdale Quay and with easy access to the Sea Bus and other public transit. The role involves some (less than 5%) business travel.
The Job Captain oversees the ongoing development of A&W prototypical design drawings for Free Standing (FS) buildings, by ensuring conformance to the requirements of the schematic design, preparing architectural working drawings, and adhering to all budgetary constraints. The Job Captain works collaboratively to produce project deliverables, reviewing the drawings of the Project Coordinators, advising on the required revisions, providing general feedback, and ensuring the design intent is consistent and well executed. This multi-faceted role involves translating concept drawings to detailed drawings, technical construction problem-solving, product sourcing and evaluation, document management, preparing and analyzing construction budgets for prototypical drawings, and developing recommendations for product and design innovation. The Job Captain also provides direct project assistance to the Senior Urban Project Manager.
The Job Captain reports to the Director of Design & Construction. The role works closely with the Director, the Vice-President, Marketing, Concept Innovation, Design & Construction, other members of the Design & Construction team, as well as with representatives of A&W’s Equipment Services and Operations teams, the Facilities Committee and external suppliers and consultants.
The candidate must possess strong architectural drafting and interior design and detailing skills (millwork and construction) using AutoCAD and good knowledge of standard construction practices and materials. An excellent problem-solver with strong organizational and leadership skills, the candidate must be able to work well under pressure and meet deadlines. A team player and collaborator, the ideal candidate has a knack for influencing others and for keeping an eye on trends that will impact facilities design and construction. With sound knowledge of office systems and procedures, the candidate must have strong knowledge of, and expertise in, using AutoCAD and a knack for learning to use design software such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and PageMaker. The candidate must have the ability to be assertive and diplomatic and possess a fine eye for detail while maintaining the big picture perspective. The candidate must be positive, resilient and self-aware and possess the confidence and drive necessary to achieve innovation in a collaborative, fast-paced commercial context. The candidate must be a motivated self-starter with high energy, a passion for translating concepts to detailed drawings and the ability to improve office systems and procedures. The candidate must have completed a post-secondary degree or diploma in Architecture, Architectural or Building Technology, or Design and at least 5 years of related technical experience.
