The School of Architecture is part of the Faculty of Environmental Design (Faculté de l’aménagement) ofthe Université de Montréal. The faculty offers programs at all three levels of study, in six areas: architecture, industrial design, interior design, game design, landscape architecture and urban planning. The diversity, quality and interdisciplinary character of teaching and research activities make the faculty an exceptional hub for the design of living environments.
The School of Architecture offers an undergraduate program and a professional Master’s program. Inaddition, its professors supervise PhD students in the individualized doctoral program in architecture and in the doctoral program in environment design. They are also active in graduate education in heritage conservation, urban design and project management. The activities of various research groups are documented on the web site of the School (http://architecture.umontreal.ca/). These activities help realize the mission of the School to contribute to the vitality and renewal of the field. The School of Architecture is one of eleven accredited schools in Canada. The language of instruction in the School is French.
As professor in the Faculty of Environmental Design, the new hire will have to contribute to excellence in teaching and in research, to the life of the institution and to the reputation of the university. As director, he orshe will play a leadership role in the School’s initiatives, manage the affairs of the School and the developmentof its teaching and research programs, represent the School’s interests in front of various academic andprofessional organisations, including the Canadian Architectural Certification Board, and give the School a strong presence on the local and international stage.
The initial hiring for the position of Director is for a four-year term.
The successful applicant must have a high level of expertise in architecture and solid knowledge of the profession, as well as skills in leadership, communication and management. He or she will have to meet hiring requirements as Associate or Full Professor. The following selection criteria will be applied:
- PhD degree, or an equivalent combination of post-professional studies, experience and research activities
- a professional Master’s degree in architecture or an equivalent degree
- teaching and research experience in a university setting
- a track record of high-level publication
- sufficient knowledge of French, or a commitment to develop mastery of the language after being hired
- thanks to the university’s program of support for French-language acquisition, within the framework of the
- Politique linguistique de l’Université de Montréal
- functional mastery of English
- In addition, experience in academic management in a university setting will be a strong asset.
