Global Director - Design Technology, IBI Group

Design professionals are continually faced with an ever-changing environment influenced by technological advancement. Conventional design practices are being redefined by the Internet of Things (IoT), big data, 5G, and artificial intelligence (AI). At IBI Group, we function as a technology-driven design firm looking to enhance the social impact of as we strived to define the cities of tomorrow.  As part of this mission, we have fully embraced Building Information Modeling (BIM) as a process that connects information sourced during the design stages with various data streams throughout the lifecycle of our projects.  Conceptually this involves creating a continuum of data from design to asset management allowing users to connect, interact and feed a Smart City platform.

To realize this mission, IBI Group has created solutions that focus on exposing purpose-fit information for various stakeholders.  We would like to present one such solution that connects a BIM to an Asset Management System. This case study will portray our head-office expansion where the assets within the design model were cataloged and connected to a custom-built asset management system. The workflow harnesses OpenBIM technology allowing the end user to experience a virtual representation of the asset via mobile devices, as well as a medium to socially interact with them. This data contains fused design information with records for maintenance along with social information identifying repair/replacements which can feed subsequent projects.  To further the concept, this data stream was connected to various other streams of inputs, whether sensory via the Internet of Things (IoT) or on-demand preferential data via our Smart City Platform, resulting in a connected information continuum.

Brent Mauti is currently the Global Director for Design Technology at IBI Group. He is a licensed architect in Ontario and Alberta who has focused on BIM throughout his career. He has been involved with major projects such as the London 2012 Olympic Games, the Paralympic Games and the Panama Canal Widening. He has also been a member of the Canada BIM Council's Board of Directors since 2016. Brent is responsible for improving the delivery of design services, business strategies, implementation and maintenance of firm-wide design technology solutions. Brent's passion focuses on consultation for lifecycle BIM interoperability and cross-platform synergy.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
At the completion of this session, the participant/learner will be able to:

  • To explain the value proposition of "data"
  • To define the concept of "designing data" as opposed to designing buildings in the traditional sense
  • To describe an active example of a Building Information Model connected to an Asset Management System
  • To list ways how social information can inform subsequent designs
