Webday Wednesdays - Net Zero Energy Building: Process Driven Design | Royal Architectural Institute of Canada

Webday Wednesdays - Net Zero Energy Building: Process Driven Design

Registration is closed for this event
For the month of February, the RAIC is pleased to present a weekly series on the subject of architecture and energy.

Net Zero Energy Building: Process Driven Design
Date: Wednesday, March 6, 2019 [Originally scheduled February 27]
Experience Level: Intermediate
Presenter: Kevin Van Hartingsveldt , Dipl.T.(Arch.), LEED AP, PMP
Kristen Yee
Loong, P.Eng., LEED AP BD+C

SESSION:
The Joyce Centre for Partnership & Innovation, a new wing at Mohawk’s Fennell campus, was a project for the CaGBC Zero Carbon Building pilot program. Mohawk College is a leader in sustainability, and the broader community. The project, led by a team of expert consultants including mcCallumSather, B+H Architects, and RDH Building Science, was driven by a net zero energy budget and has garnered national attention. This presentation will explore a new philosophy for net zero building design with the objective of understanding the concepts and implementation of an energy budget and integrated building systems design. As one of the first & largest net zero energy/net zero carbon institutional projects in Canada, this project is a bold step forward in the future of construction in North America. This project sets a precedent for an achievable sustainable design standard for buildings of all typologies. 1. Introduction: • Project overview • Why Net Zero? • What does Net Zero mean? Definitions and Applications: • “Net zero” • “Net zero Carbon” • “Net zero Energy” 2. Philosophy: • Prioritize project mandate • Energy budget • Strategic integrated design 3. Design • High Performance Enclosure • High Performance HVAC • Integration with geothermal and photovoltaic • Measurement and Verification 4. Evolution of Design: Managing Changes and Unknowns: • Adjustments for budget and schedule • Managing impacts of design updates 5. The “Final” Product

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
At the completion of this session, the participant/learner will be able to:

  • Describe how strategic integrated design can simplify systems design.
  • Summarizehow to treat an energy budget in the same way as one would treat a capital budget, while filtering design decisions through project priorities.
  • Recognize how passive design measures support high efficiency HVAC solutions.
  • Recall various system options, their advantages and disadvantages and how renewable energy generation can be integrated in design solutions.

Continuing education learning hours: 1 credit

Kristen Yee Loong moved to RDH Building Science in 2016. As an Energy and Sustainability Specialist, with over 9 years prior experience, Kristen’s responsibilities include whole building energy modeling and interpreting results to analyse energy conservation measures, support design decisions, and support capital & life cycle cost analyses. Prior to joining RDH, Kristen was a Senior Energy Analyst who led the team of energy analysts and provided technical reviews. On the Joyce Centre for Partnership & Innovation project RDH acted as the specialty consultant for energy, sustainability, envelope, and measurement & verification; Kristen acted one of the leads of RDH’s project team.
