Gold Medal

The RAIC's Gold Medal is the highest honour that it can bestow in recognition of a significant and lasting contribution to Canadian architecture and is not to be construed as a competition. The terms of reference set forth here outline the process of selection to be used to identify the recipient of this honour.

In recognition of a significant body of work deemed to be a major contribution to Canadian architecture, and having lasting influence on the theory and/or the practice of architecture, either – through demonstrated excellence in design; and/or, excellence in research or education.

Gold Medal — 2015 Recipient

Brian MacKay-Lyons, FRAIC

MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects

Born and raised in the village of Arcadia in Southwestern Nova Scotia, Brian MacKay-Lyons received his Bachelor of Architecture from the Technical University of Nova Scotia in 1978, where he was awarded the RAIC’s Student Medal. He received his Master of Architecture and Urban Design at the University of California, Los Angeles and won the Dean's Award for Design.

Principal, Peter Cardew Architects

Depuis la création de son bureau d’architectes, il y a vingt-sept ans, Peter Cardew a réalisé bien des projets qui lui ont valu une reconnaissance internationale pour avoir été primés ou publiés dans des magazines spécialisés. Peter Cardew tient à participer personnellement à chaque projet. C’est pourquoi il contrôle la charge de travail du bureau et qu’il a préféré que celui-ci ne prenne pas trop d’expansion.

Pour la première fois en plus de 30 ans, la Médaille d’or de l’IRAC est décernée à une personne qui n’est pas architecte, en reconnaissance des réalisations extraordinaires de l’Aga Khan qui utilise l’architecture comme instrument de développement communautaire pacifique et durable partout dans le monde.

Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims
Founder and Chairman of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN)

The selection of His Highness marks the first time in more than 30 years that a non-architect has been chosen to receive the RAIC Gold Medal, and recognizes the Aga Khan’s extraordinary achievements using architecture as an instrument to further peaceful and sustainable community development around the world.

Gold Medal — 2012 Recipient

Recipient: 
Peter Cardew, MRAIC

Principal, Peter Cardew Architects

In the twenty seven years since he established his own practice, Peter Cardew has been responsible for a number of projects that have received international recognition through awards and publications. The practice limits the size of the office and the amount of work that it takes on at any one time in order that Peter can maintain a significant involvement in each project.

Bing Thom is a global thinker who through the strength of his architecture has encouraged communities in Canada and around the world to raise their ambitions and strive to improve their condition. His natural curiosity coupled with intensely critical thinking has resulted in architecture of innovation and a quest for excellence that is at the forefront of what is being produced this era.
