Sustainable Urban Systems Design

Course Description

An international, nine-year project called Sustainable Urban Systems Design (SUSD) has produced many new ideas for planning cities and neighborhoods.

Nine cities have been involved: San Diego/Tijuana, Panjim (Inde), Changsu (Chine, Volgoda (Russie), Buenos Aires, Tokyo, Mishima, Berlin, and Vancouver. The Canadian team, called cities PLUS , won the first trimester competition for the best 100-year plan and the pathway to implement that plan. The ideas, plans, process and "lessons learned" from these nine cities will be reviewed. The course will focus on the applicability of these new ideas to the design of Canadian cities. The second and thirst trimester projects for SUSD will also be described.
