Course Title

Natural Stone and Marble in Modern Architecture

Course Description

This RAIC Professional Development course, in association with Gillis Quarries of Manitoba, combines the best in design and technical information about natural stone and marble. Stone is a very durable material which does not emit volatile organic compounds (VOC's) or other toxins, can be recycled, and is quarried throughout most regions of Canada, making it an environmentally responsible choice for architects.

The course will include an overview of the Canadian stone and quarry industry; the latest information on the technology of stone wall systems and building envelopes from Dr. Mike Hatzinkolas; and it will also profile the design expertise of Malcolm Holzman of Holzman Moss Architects (former with Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer Associates) and author of Stone Work: Designing with Stone. In addition, a Master Carver, Rob Assie, will discuss the preservation of stonework and practical applications and challenges of stone. Mike Picco, P.Eng., will discuss construction optimization using stone cladding.
