HC 101 -
Past Perfect: The Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada

Course Description

This full day course is intended for Architects, Engineers and Building Professionals who are interested in understanding the basic principals of heritage conservation and how to apply them in the context of projects involving heritage buildings and sites. The course is based on the presentation of the Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada, the first pan-Canadian reference document guiding the decision-making process for heritage conservation. Case studies will offer opportunities to see how they are applied as part of the design and review process.

Participants will:

  • Develop an understanding of the concept of a values-based approach to conservation;
  • Develop an understanding of the decision-making process described in the Standards and Guidelines, including choosing an appropriate type of treatment;
  • Develop appropriate strategies for intervening on a historic place while ensuring that its significance will be protected;
  • Develop the capacity of using the Standards and Guidelines to design and assess conservation projects; and
  • Learn about sources of information and useful references to implement projects.
