RAIC Awards of Excellence

Check out the RAIC web site for more information on the call for submissions for the Awards of Excellence – Contract Documentation, Innovation in Architecture, Architectural Firm, Advocate for Architecture, The Allied Arts Medal and, new this year, the Prix du XXe siècle / XXth Century Award. The deadline is November 30, 2004. Nominations for the RAIC Gold Medal are due December 31, 2004.

Due to mail house difficulties the RAIC inserts are making sporadic and very delayed appearances across the country. To counter this RAIC contacted the provincial and territorial associations to help spread the word regarding the awards as deadlines are fast approaching. We wish to extend our deepest appreciation for the cooperation and generosity unanimously received from Associations, all of which went out of their way to provide immediate support in getting the message to Architects.

2004 RAIC Professional Development Program well underway

Space is still available for the RAIC courses – SDCB 302 Sustainable Building: Making the Case for Building Integrated Photovoltaics and Natural Stone and Marble in Modern Architecture. Don’t be disappointed – register now for this fall’s RAIC professional development courses.

Board of Directors reviews Strategic Plan

In a special session before its October meeting the RAIC Board of Directors reviewed and reaffirmed its commitment to its strategic plan and the following adjustments.

This commitment supports the RAIC mission to be the voice for Architecture and its practice in Canada, and its goal to provide the national framework for the development and recognition of architectural excellence.

RAIC makes Submission to Parliamentary Secretary's Task Force on Federal Procurement

President Chris Fillingham, FRAIC and Executive Director Jon Hobbs, MRAIC made a submission to the Parliamentary Secretary's Task Force on Government-Wide Review of Procurement, chaired by the Honourable Walt Lastewka, Member of Parliament for St. Catharines. The Task Group had prepared a Preliminary Paper and Concepts for Discussion. The RAIC believes it is important to constantly advocate to the Federal Government about appropriate selection and contracting procedures for architects.

Key points of the submission

The Task Force welcomes further input from the RAIC. For more information: Concept Paper, RAIC Submission

There’s still time to invite your MP to this year’s Parliamentary Reception

Good news! Just weeks after the first invitation letter more than 70 Senators, MPs and Ministers have already confirmed their attendance at the Parliamentary Reception being held November 24, 2004 in association with the Canada Green Building Council, the Canadian Construction Association, the Association of Consulting Engineers of Canada, Construction Specifications Canada and the Building Owners and Managers Association of Canada. Veronafiere course and Marmomacc get A+

The following quotes highlight the benefit of receiving an RAIC scholarship to attend a continuing education course on stone materials during MARMOMACC, the world’s leading trade fair for the marble and stone industry in Verona, Italy.

“Course content ranged from tours of quarry and manufacturing sites, to seminars, lectures and case studies of buildings and sites featuring natural stone in design. Case studies included: the DZ Bank by Gehry, designed in stone for the area of the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin; Tomba Brion, designed by Architectura Carlo Scarpa; the Palladian Villa Barbarbo, the headquarters of the Banca Populare also by Carlo Scarpa; and, the Museum of Modern Art in Rovereto, designed by Architect Mario Botta. I would truly like to thank the RAIC for this incredible and memorable opportunity.”

Michael Richard, MRAIC, Richard & Co. Architecture Inc., Saint John

“The continuing education activities presented by Vince Marazita and his colleagues, which consisted of seminars and tours dealing with the extraction and production of architectural stone products, were extremely informative and delivered in very interesting ways. For instance seminars on quarrying methods and the D Z Bank by Frank Gehry took place deep inside the underground quarry that supplied the stone for the Berlin project and were followed by a demonstration of the machinery used to extract stone blocks from the tunnels. Tours of landmark modern buildings were conducted by people closely associated with the design and construction of them, while historic sites were presented to us by very knowledgeable local art historians.”

John Featherstone, MRAIC, Diamond and Schmitt Architects, Toronto

ONE LAST THING…

It is important that a PM (project manager) be technically competent and can understand the issues going on in a project. But the PM needs to see beyond technical competency, and look at the project’s bigger picture. Technical experts tend to micromanage in the areas of knowledge where they are skilled, and fail to see the project as a whole.

“The best skills that define PMs are soft skills, not the hard skills. Technical proficiency is important, but not a requirement.”

PSMJ International November 2004 – Michael D’Alessandro, P.E., PMP
