"Giving stone an evocative presence requires a design process without constraint. Uniting the dazzling beauty of this natural material as it comes from the ground with industrial precision and economy necessitates an examination of its limits as well as its possibilities. My objective is to employ simple installations when appropriate and to go beyond them when it is fitting in order to educe more subtle attributes. The choice of stone should relate to the circumstances of the project at hand, and should achieve results not possible with any other product. The challenge to make the most of a material's distinctive qualities is an invitation to advance design. I have found a variety of ways to bring out stone's latent properties to forge forms and mold spaces, to enliven environments with color and texture, and to arouse human interest. Stone's unexpected attributes, properly emphasized, can cast a transforming light on a finished piece of architecture."
