Visit Italy and attend Marmommacc for RAIC!

Once again the RAIC will be sending three architects to Italy for a week of terrific professional development. The course, “Designing with Natural Stone” provides a comprehensive overview of architectural stone and marble. Architects learn how stone and marble is quarried, treated, cut, selected for specific jobs, and then installed using the latest technologies. The course will include field trips to quarries and stone cutting factories, a tour of Palladian villas, and ample time for a thorough exploration of MARMOMACC.

RAIC architects are eligible to compete for scholarships covering tuition, meals, accommodations and local transportation and the RAIC will also pay the administration fee for selected architects. Those selected will be responsible for their travel to and from Verona. Selected participants should plan to arrive in Verona on Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004 in time for a welcoming dinner and may depart Sunday Oct. 10, 2004.

RAIC members who are interested should submit a résumé to jonhobbs@raic.org before June 30, 2004.

PROFESSIONAL NEWS

New Government Electronic Tendering Service (GETS III) launches May 31

Public Works and Government Services Canada will be replacing the MERX service with the new federal government's electronic tendering service (GETS III) on May 31, 2004. This new service will be offered by the federal government at significantly lower costs than its predecessor (only for federal government opportunities).

The new system will make entire Requests for Proposal available for viewing in order to allow firms the opportunity to make an informed decision as to whether to invest in preparing a proposal. The second significant change of interest to RAIC members, deals with the tendering of construction projects. GETS III is based on the premise that almost all information will be prepared and distributed electronically. Therefore PWGSC will require that drawings, specifications and addenda be prepared and submitted not only in paper copy but also in electronic portable document format (PDF). Until this requirement is written into scopes of work PWGSC will arrange to have the document scanned and converted into PDF files for the tendering process. For more details, view the following document in PDF format.

New Carnet model to be introduced

Effective May 2004, a new Carnet model will be implemented in Canada as part of a worldwide system upgrade. Due to the tightening of the Canada-U.S. border, U.S. Customs more often demands a Carnet for business travelers wishing to enter the U.S. with their goods. These information sessions will be particularly important for Canadians traveling to the United States. To brief clients on the new model, and to ensure that their experience using it will be positive, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce has scheduled a number of information sessions in April, May and June in 10 major cities across Canada.
