Wanted Ontario Northeast and Nunavut representative for RAIC Board of Directors

The RAIC Board of Directors is composed of 13 voting directors and with the election of Yves Gosselin, MIRAC, of Ottawa to the position of 1st Vice President/President-Elect, the Ontario Northeast and Nunavut seat is now vacant. Members in this region are asked to send in nominations using the form soon to arrive in the mail or the attached form.

New membership category vote underway

A proposed bylaw amendment on new membership categories was approved at the RAIC Annual General Meeting in June and letter ballots are now in the mail. Please take a moment to review the rationale behind the amendments and return your ballot with your confirmation vote.

College of Fellows calls for nominations

All members are encouraged to take some time and consider whether their colleagues and/or mentors should be considered for Fellowship. Nominations must reach Chairmen of Regional Advisory Committees no later than Oct. 1, 2004. To simplify the process, the RAIC communications team has developed the attached electronic nomination form.

RAIC Distance Learning Module

The RAIC and ICHU are trying to determine the market for an on-line course on Quality Management – please take a moment to complete this short on-line survey.

RAIC Looking for Consulting Team for new Professional Development Course for winter 2005

The RAIC is looking for a team of architects and engineers to develop and deliver a new course in the SDCB series. If you are interested and have experience in retrofitting buildings refer to this Request for Proposals.

PSMJ seeking volunteer for advisory board

In October 2004, PSMJ Resources Inc. will launch PSMJ International, a new monthly newsletter relevant to architects and engineers outside the USA. RAIC members will receive a discount on this new publication.

The RAIC is looking for a volunteer member to appoint to the to the PSMJ International’s Advisory Board. Responsibilities include providing input as warranted on the layout, usability, and content as well as suggesting article ideas and/or providing finished pieces for the newsletter.

PSMJ Resources Inc. publishes the monthly newsletters Professional Services Management Journal and PM Tactics, which offer business advice to principals and project managers in the architecture and engineering industries. The mission of these publications is to help architects and engineers run their businesses more profitably and efficiently.

Survey on building energy controls

The NRC's Institute for Research in Construction and the Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN), are investigating building energy controls. The NRC invites architects to participate in an online survey to gather information from representatives of decision-makers who help manage, own, or design commercial buildings. New AIA Continuing Education Course

Canadian Centre for Architecture announces its 2005-2006 Visiting Scholars Program

The Program welcomes applications from scholars and architects conducting research at post-doctoral or more advanced academic levels. Scholars should submit a research proposal in any area of architectural history, theory, or criticism that takes into account the mandate of the Program and the scope of the CCA's library and collections. "Transnational Spaces" - The New Program of the Bauhaus Kolleg VI

The new academic year of the Kolleg of the Foundation Bauhaus Dessau begins Oct. 18, 2004. This marks the sixth time Kolleg has invited an international group of designers, architects, artists and scientists to engage in postgraduate research on current urbanistic topics. Between Oct. 18, 2004 and July 22, 2005, the program will investigate the issue of transnationalization of urban spaces. In times of economic globalization, multi-media communication and transnational migration, cities exist in parallel worlds. ONE LAST THING…

An excerpt from a column in Architecture Week entitled Architectural Stonework by Malcolm Holzman, FAIA

The application of stone can result in architecture unlike that created from any other material. And it can be of greater interest today than it has been in the recent past. If architects redirect their attention to this material, they may discover, as I have, that it is sensuous to the touch, striking to the eye, and pleasing to the soul.
