Canada’s official entry at the 2014 Venice Biennale in Architecture is called Arctic Adaptations: Nunavut at 15. It will explore how architecture might help nurture robust and vibrant Northern communities by adapting and responding to Nunavut’s unique climates, geographies and cultures, as well as the dramatic social, economic and environmental changes transforming Canada’s Arctic today.

“We care deeply that Canadian Architecture is well represented on the world stage, and the Venice Biennale is where we need to shine if we want to compete.”

Janna Levitt, FRAIC, Principal, Levitt Goodman Architects

Arctic Adaptations is organized and curated by Lateral Office. They will work with five Nunavut-based organizations, five Canadian architecture firms and five Canadian architecture schools to develop innovative design proposals on the themes of Health, Education, Housing, Recreation and Arts.

After its premiere in Venice (June 7 – November 23, 2014), Arctic Adaptations will embark on a multi-city Canadian exhibition tour.

“Representing Canada at the 2012 Venice Biennale in Architecture was the opportunity of a lifetime. … It was amazing … to advance the appreciation of architecture and the discussion about the value of architecture in Canada in such a public and inclusive forum. It is vital that we now build on this success and continue to nurture our creative talent.”
