Take advantage of the biggest international architecture event in the world…

The Venice Biennale in Architecture is the single most important and prestigious international event in contemporary architecture; it is to architecture what the Olympics are to sports.

From late August to November 2012, more than 50 countries will bring their architectural finest to Venice to compete with each other for the coveted Golden Lion Award for best national exhibition. Canada will be a serious contender after attracting global attention in 2010 with “Hylozoic Ground”.

Migrating Landscapes by 5468796 Architecture and Jae-Sung Chon is Canada’s official entry at the 2012 Venice Biennale in Architecture. It examines how we as Canadians express our diverse cultural memories in designs for contemporary housing. To do this, its young organizers, who were all born outside of Canada, will design a ‘new landscape’ as an exhibition infrastructure and invite other young Canadian architects and designers to respond to it with designs for housing based on their cultural memories. These designs will be ‘settled’ into the ‘new landscape’, and together will form the exhibition at the Canada Pavilion in Venice.

Before it goes to Venice, Migrating Landscapes will spend the year leading up to the Biennale on a high-profile tour across Canada. An open call to young architects and designers will result in regional events and exhibitions at public venues from coast to coast, culminating in a National Final competition and six-week exhibition at the Winnipeg Art Gallery in the spring of 2012. In this way, the next generation of Canada’s most talented architects and designers will collectively paint a picture of what it means to be Canadian in the 21st century.

Architecture Canada | RAIC and the Canada Council for the Arts are working together with the Migrating Landscapes team to find financial support for this unique nation-wide project on its journey across Canada and to Venice. With your contribution, we can create something all Canadians will take pride in, and begin to build a base of recurring sponsorship that will ensure the future success of Canadian architecture events and exhibitions at home and in the world.
