A note from Bill MacDonald:

Dear Rafael and Catherine,

Thank you both so very much for all you did to make the Arcitecture4Kids initiative for our Grade 3 students such a terrific success these past few weeks. As I ponder the outcomes; these young architects received a terrific immersion into the built environment and their work and understanding of the architectural process in so many projects really did capture their energy and enthusiasm appropriately. Well Done!

Rafi and Catherine, the entire project really was outstanding and I want you both to know how very much your contributions are appreciated. The students have a new found understanding of architecture that I know will follow them through their education years and hopefully to some new found careers in the future. Please see the attached collage for a brief snap shot of the last day. I’m most looking forward to the exhibition on April 3 for the full visual impact of your creative and educational magic.

Thank you again for your commitment to the new initiative for Artists for Kids. I do hope we will be able to continue this program (and involve you both) in the future.

Sincerely yours./b

Architecture Canada (Royal Architectural Institute of Canada) and Artists for Kids are bringing architecture to life for kids. In November, two dozen Grade 3 students had the opportunity to work with an architect to expand their understanding of space and forms. Running for three Mondays, the students who were selected by their teachers, were able to learn more about the power of architecture and the elements that make it effective as well an asset to our communities.

“We feel that Architecture should be one of the primary building blocks in a child’s early education,” says Wayne DeAngelis, Regional Director of Architecture Canada for BC and the Yukon. “In this way as they mature it will become an integral part of their environment and thinking, leading them to respect both the built and natural forms that surround us every day of our lives.”

The classes in November were taught by Kate Busby IA MAIBC of FormLine Architecture and Urbanism, and Candace Gillespie, a retired art teacher. “I wanted to introduce kids to architecture as a career choice,” says Kate. “I remember what it was like to have someone come in to my school to talk about their work. It was really inspiring and informative. I wanted to offer that to other kids, so they might consider architecture as a career, or at least understand what we do and how it impacts them.

In the three day-long classes, kids have learned about perspective, bubble diagrams, elevation drawings and the use of clay in formulating designs, to help them develop a sensitivity and appreciation for the built environment.

“We chose Grade 3 students, because that’s the year they study structures, so this enrichment program supports their curriculum,” says Yolande Martinello, Director of Artists for Kids. “The kids get profound benefits from having the first-hand insight of working professionals to enhance their understanding of the field and its impact on their own surroundings.”

In January 2012 Artists for Kids will welcome 24 more Grade 3 students, to be taught by architect Rafael Santa Ana. In addition, a group of Grade 8 students taught by Bo Helliwell MRAIC will participate in an enrichment class designed specifically for them. We thank Architecture Canada and the architects for their contribution to the education and inspiration of our students.

John Fulker’s compelling architectural photographs first appeared in publications featuring modern design in the early 1960s. In subsequent decades, Fulker became a leading Canadian photographer through his intuitive approach to image-making. In North America, a burgeoning post-war building boom saw a flourishing period of innovative modernist architecture, particularly on the West Coast, and demand for photographers grew alongside it.

In 1958, while studying photojournalism at the New York Institute of Photography, Fulker realized that he could make a living photographing architecture and studied the work of prominent American architectural photographers, Julius Schulman and Ezra Stoller. Fulker’s images of iconic homes and buildings designed by Arthur Erickson, Barclay McLeod, Dan White, Clifford Wiens, Douglas Cardinal and Barry Downs among numerous others promoted innovative Canadian design to local and international audiences.

From the late 1960s until the late 1990s Fulker worked on international assignments photographing contemporary homes and historic buildings from around the world. Today in a time of rapid redevelopment and demolition, Fulker’s work is a lasting record of an important architectural legacy.

This is the first exhibition of John Fulker’s original photographs in over thirty years.
